i came across the Lifestraw at www.eatdrinkandsurvive.com and it looked pretty interesting for a BOB. Has anyone ever used one? if so what did you think?

oneyedman (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Welcome foust1012.

I think that for $19.95, it seems like a good buy.

foust1012 --- 13 years ago -

I just bought 5 and the shipping was free. I'll let y'all know what I think when I get them.

oneyedman (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Aquamira Frontier Filter An Emergency water filter so compact it fits in a shirt pocket, weighs less than one ounce, filters up to 20 gallons, 99.9% effective against waterborne pathogens and contaminants as small as 2 microns.

The Frontier Emergency Water Filter System is ideal for hiking, travel, and emergency preparedness. It is the perfect addition to your 72 hour emergency kit. One unit will filter up to 20 gallons (75L) of water. The Frontier Filter is tested and certified to remove 99.9% of Cryptosporidium and Giardia. The Frontier Emergency Water Filter System is also easy to operate, just attach and expand the straw, submerge the filter end into the water source, and drink through the straw.

Ultra light and compact, the Aquamira Frontier Emergency Filter System weighs less than one ounce and easily slips into a day pack, shirt pocket or travel luggage and is always ready when you need it. The Frontier Filter is the ideal alternative to heavy, bulky and expensive pump filtration units when space and weight are primary factors. Cheaper than dirt is a cool publication

I have a friend who has been to the new store up near Dallas.... He says it is so cool his head almost exploded.

foust1012 --- 13 years ago -

I live 5 minutes from the new store. That is the straw by aquamira. They only do 20 gallons to 99.9 percent pure. The Lifestraw does 256 gallons to 99.99999 percent pure. I've used that straw before but was not satisfied. That's why I'm wondering about the Lifestraw. But, you should definitely check out Cheaper than Dirt store if you're ever in the area..

I think maybe it is a little more portable?

Certainly fine for an spare in the car of family member BOB.
$9.95 you can get 2 for the price of one of the other.....

foust1012 --- 13 years ago -

But you would need to buy 13 of them to purify the amount of water that the lifestraw claims to be able to. I'll let you know how the testing goes when I get them.

rightwingmom (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

foust1012,
Thanks for posting this. I have Seychelle bottles in my BOB, but these would be more compact.

Look forward to an update on your testing!

They appear to be neat.

I will wait for the results.

I got my lifestraws yesterday. I took one to the creek by my house and drank from it. So far so good! It cleared up the water quite a bit and it tasted fine. I'll let y'all know in a day or two if I get sick!

I like the idea of the straws. They're smaller and more portable, but if you're on the move and find a water source you'll be able to consume but not take any with you.

Picked up two Seychelle water bottles with 2 filters from the LDS online store. Each filter processes 100 gallons. Total cost is $22 w/ free shipping.

I know they're more bulky, but my thought was...consume what you needed and refill if you HAD to continue traveling.

Just a thought...

p.s. I may buy the straws.

I love the LDS store. Lots of great stuff there cheap. Have you ever gone to the LDS cannery? In Houston or carrolton?

rightwingmom (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Yes I have, it's GREAT!

Check out this thread:

Of course, up near Dallas. Houston never gets the cool stuff.

Berkey makes some great stuff too.

They're not cheap but they work great.

I love the Berkey. I got mine at www.berkeyproducts.com. They are a local (Texas) company and they were great to work with.
