I have my garden and i'm now looking for some plans for a chicken house. Anyone build one lately? I will get into goats later for milk/meats. The LDS cannery is awesome and I have made many friends within the Mormon church and their prepping ideas.

oneyedman (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Doesn't sound like you are in Kingwood.

Sounds like you are moving along well in your Prep.

I do not have the land for a garden or animals. My prep focuses on food/water storage, barter and defense mostly.

I am currently trying to cobble a couple other Preppers together to purchase some land.... I'll let you know how that goes as Preppers are a skittish lot.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

Yes..we are. I have my own water well on my land so I'm looking for a way to get the water out without electricity right now.

Excellent.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

Also I'm buying a large outdoor woodburning oven/stove.

Odin --- 13 years ago -

I'm interested in buying some land in a year. Gathering up the cash to do it now.

I have plenty of food storage, though always increasing it monthly.

Weapons, not so much.

I'm good on pharmaceuticals and other medical supplies. Lots of fish mox and fish flox.

Basher & MrSerious,
Welcome to the site. Sounds like you've got a good start on your preps.

DH and I recently got rid of our chickens. Considering going with rabbits.

Look around: add comments, start your own thread, you know the routine.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

I've never dealt with rabbits...I know how to handle and keep chickens tho. Also I can can them for eats. I'll look at some rabbit info as well. Thank you

Without long term storage I'd be in trouble.

I can grow a small garden, but as far as hunting and gathering goes... I'd be fairly helpless.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

In youtube I follow a guy named southernprepper1. Look him up...he answered Lot of questions for me.

Odin --- 13 years ago -

I think it's great that you are a police officer and a prepper.

If the SHTF, you can be out helping the community (and keeping chaos at bay) instead of worrying about finding food and other supplies.

I hope most others in law enforcement prep to some extent.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

You would be amazed at how many of us are. One buddy makes all our ammo. I have about 7 thousand rounds of .223. About 4k in .45. And about 1k in .22. All made in my buddies garage with my help. We all do something.

Odin --- 13 years ago -

Great!

As I'm sure you know, a lot of normal people aren't real keen on the police.

Mainly because many of us only encounter police officers only when we are getting a ticket for speeding or some other revenue enhancing infraction.

And we've all seen the rolling stops and the speeding home to work being done.... so that grates on many people. Especially right after we've gotten a ticket for one of those very things. LOL. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm appreciative of the work you all do and the dangers you face every day. Just something that nags at me a bit.

Off topic, but ehhh.. couldn't help myself.

It gives me a more positive outlook that ya'll are out there getting prepared in case it's necessary. If the SHTF, we will all be very grateful if prepared officers are able to keep the unprepared hoodlums under some control if possible.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

MrSerious..being a cop is not who I am. It is only what I do. Now back to preps. I'm rerooofing my house and I will use it as a rainwater collector. This way I can use this water for animals and garden. Saves drinking water for just us. Three three thousand gallon water tanks will collect rainwater from the roof.

Odin --- 13 years ago -

Water is my primary concern right now.

I have a berkey water filter and keep bleach on hand, but will still need a good source.

My neighbors have a pool. I guess that would work in a pinch. The berkey would filter that pretty good.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

Look for some water drums. I have ten fifty five gallon drums for water. Every 90 days I drain and refill. Craigslist is a good place. You can even use the old soda drums...those are thirty five gallon. They are cheap.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

On Craigslist right now in Houston...55 gal drums...15 bucks...I'm going to buy some Sunday

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

Get the metal ones for 25...don't get the 15 dollar ones...those held soap. Yuk

REDD --- 13 years ago -

Jesus Christ.... You people are so far ahead of me I feel like I haven't even started to prep. My wife and I are still working on getting our first months food rations built up. We was in the dark too longI guess.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

I'll answer any questions u have REDD

Holy crap. Can I get in on that? If only to come and learn how to reload. I have wanted to try to start.

oneyedman (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Three three thousand gallon water tanks will collect rainwater from the roof.

What is the cost on those. I want to get a few myself

**edit** nevermind question answered if I had bothered to read further

oneyedman (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

You people are so far ahead of me I feel like I haven't even started to prep.

Redd, It has taken me 5 years to build my food stock for 3 people. I now yearly rotate stock based on expiration dates. 2 years ago I started long term bucket storage of rice and beans. This is an excellent supplement to cans, does not need rotation and you can get alot of nutritional bang for your buck.

Don't forget the items that do not expire, salt, honey, sugar.

When Ike hit, my company supplied us with CASES of MRE's, they shipped in hundreds of cases to give to the employees anlong with flashlights, batteries and even ice.

I traded everything else with colleagues for their case of MRE's and ended up with 25 CASES of MRE's (5 to 8 year shelf life)...pretty good haul for FREE!!!!

Keep at it.... If you are ever in town, I would be happy to sit with you and impart what knowledge I have (I do not profess to be an expert).

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

Very good catch on the MRE'S Oneyedman. I used to have alot but I gave them away. Dumb..

Im going to post the youtube vids of the water tanks for catching rainwater. And a guy I follow on youtube named southernprepper1

Basher,
Great video! Makes my 3 55 gal. drums look puny, but they're better than nothing. :)

REDD,
Try not to stress too much. Be thankful that you woke up. So many will be caught off guard when the SHTF.

Pick our brains. PM questions. DH and I have been prepping for over 3 years. IF we don't know the answer, someone else on the site might or we'll find the answer for you!

Keep prepping! :)

Odin --- 13 years ago -

I'm still counting on my neighbor's pools for now.

That's a heck of a lot of water.

Basher FiveTwo --- 13 years ago -

The whole neighborhood will have those drained inside of a week. Everyone is thinking the same as you.
