We are, by NO means, able to produce enough produce to sustain us, but our gardening skills have improved greatly. We are currently using the Square Foot Gardening method and have liked the results. DH is also in the process of installing drip irrigation hoses to all the boxes.

We are enjoying:
several herbs (mint, basil, sage, etc.)
bell peppers
loose leaf lettuce
spinach
green beans

coming soon:
tomatoes
cucumbers (hopefully)
okra (also hopeful!)

Along with our food storage, our stockpile of seeds and gardening skills should help us offset hard times.

Side note ~
We also have a variety of fruit trees. While still young and not in full production yet, we're optimistic that our efforts will be rewarded! The orange tree is full. We WOULD have muscadine grapes, but the dang squirrels had a feast!!!

Any other preppers working on self-sustaining gardening or fruit trees? Let me hear from you. Advice, insight, suggestions are ALWAYS welcomed!

Squash and zucchini are doing great out here near Austin this year as well as carrots and okra I have to much of all those to eat so I've had to give tons away .... I'm just getting into trying to can and preserve everything .... Out watermelon and corn were a total loss though and I think the tomatos went in to late in the year .... Are green beans easy?

bwestand,
Congrats on your harvest! Absolutely look into canning AND dehydrating to store your bounty!

Green beans have been one of my more successful veggies. I've done both pole and bush green beans with pretty good success, considering our small yard and limited growing space. Give them a try!

Cleaned out 2 garden beds.
Planted snap peas w/ edible pods and chives. Spinach and lettuce may be next.

Harvested sage and basil...drying over the kitchen window.

Still have a LOT to do in my garden boxes! Thinking about increasing my medicinal herbs. Perhaps some perennials in the yard and annuals in the boxes.

More bell peppers and jalapenos harvested and frozen.

Mint rebounding from the scorching summer.

Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, lettuce, and green onions down.

Starting chamomile in the kitchen window.
